Energy and the City Roadshow

The Sustainable Energy Research Group is hosting a roadshow on the 9th of November 2017, addressing challenges and opportunities of Energy and the City.

This event is aimed at those involved with urban energy and housing services, city planning, electrical power generation and distribution and also organisations concerned with addressing fuel poverty and promoting energy efficiency.


  • 9.15 – 10.00: Arrival, registration and coffee
  • 10.00 – 10.15: Introductions and welcome
  • 10.15 – 10.30: Energy at the University of Southampton – Professor Bahaj A.S.
  • 10.30 – 10.45: How much energy can we save from domestic retrofit?

A set of online tools based on simplified building energy models and using GIS have been developed and applied to every domestic building Southampton, and used to explore different levels of energy saving interventions.

  • 10.45 – 11.00: How much electricity can we generate from rooftop solar panels?

A tool based on GIS has been developed to assess rooftop solar PV potential and applied to Southampton. This tool will be demonstrated during this session.

  • 11.00 – 11.30: Exhibition and coffee break
  • 11.30 – 12.00: Design for comfort and energy savings – Thermal comfort and occupant behaviour.
  • 12.00 – 12.30: Design for low carbon cities and wellbeing – Urban form, growth, community and energy use.
  • 12.30 – 14.00: Lunch, poster session and exhibition

During the buffet lunch, a series of displays will illustrate the results of research projects carried out as part of Liveable Cities in Southampton. Researchers will be on hand to informally answer questions and discuss the results.

  • 14.00 – 14.30: Rezoning the industrial waterfont

A historical legacy of waterfront industrial zones provides jobs but prevents access to Southampton’s riverscape, both physically and visually. How can the rezoning of these areas address the challenges of Southampton as a whole?

  • 14.30 – 15.00: Discussion and feedback

Wrap-up session with a chance to have your say on the issues discussed during the day. In small groups followed by plenary session.
